With ‘Wide Sargasso’ Sea being such a vast story, I chose a fragment I was particularly interested in, which was Antionette being locked in her bedroom. Antionette was also deemed mad, as was the female protagonist in ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ which sees an educated woman suffering mental illness, trapped in her room with nothing today, spiralling towards madness and eventual suicide. It is because she is educated that she becomes mad with nothing to do.

I considered making an experimental narrative circling mental health within women at the time it was embarrassing to disclose mental health, but also domestic violence, as in both cases it was the husbands trapping them in their rooms, not seeking professional help and suppressing their voices. It would be interesting to keep the setting to a singular room. It is difficult, however to portray a spiralling descent into madness in just 3 minutes.
